Trains On Fire Pennsylvania

A safety film produced by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1955 that discusses fighting fires on locomotives and teaches railroad employees about the type of fires they are likely to face and the equipment that is available to fight the fires. PRR diesel & electric locomotives feature throughout the film including some interesting trackside and in cab film of trains on fire. Many different locomotives of the PRR are seen including GG1′s. The Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) was an American Class I railroad, founded in 1846. Commonly referred to as the “Pennsy”, the PRR was headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The PRR was the largest railroad by traffic and revenue in the US throughout the first two-thirds of the twentieth century and was at one time the largest publicly traded corporation in the world. At its peak, it controlled about 10000 miles (16000 km) of rail line; in the 1920s it carried about three times the traffic (measured by ton-miles of freight) as other railroads of comparable length, such as Union Pacific or Santa Fe. The only rival was New York Central, which carried around three-quarters of PRR’s ton-miles.

Bob Strong’s Holiday Or

Bob Strong’s Holiday or Adrift in the Channel

Bob Strong and his sister Nellie are the children of a busybarrister, too busy to take them on holiday, and they are sentby train down to Portsmouth to spend the summer holidays withtheir aunt. The dog Rover travels in the guard’s van, and inthe same compartment of the train there is an elderly gentlemanwho turns out to be a retired sea-captain. The train is moving out of Guildford when a grubby boy’s face appears at the window. They let the boy in, and the Captain decides to pay the fare for the boy, who is a runaway from a dreadfully cruel stepfather. They all spend the holiday together, doing various things with boats, fish, seaweed, andvisiting various interesting places, some of which they find tobe a con! They travel to the Isle of Wight, just a few milesacross the Solent, and even visit Seaview where I, the reviewer, was brought up. Many of the interesting things they did werewhat we as boys fifty years later also did. They get involved in a couple of disasters, including the wreck of a brand-new excursion steamer. As in my day, the engines of these ships were most interesting, being triple expansion horizontal steam engines driving paddle-wheels, and, like Bob, I used to spend the journeys to and from the Isle of Wight hovering at the engine-room door, admiring these amazingly beautiful artefacts. But the other disaster I will not tell you about save only to say that Alderney and the Casquets Rock, over fifty miles from the Isle of Wight, are mentioned, and these too are places with which I am very familiar. You may wonder what happened to the runaway boy, Dick, and here again a very suitable arrangement was made for him, for he wasaccepted for training as a boy seaman. (Nick Hodson) According to Wikipedia: “John Conroy Hutcheson (1840- 1897) was a British author of novels and short stories about life aboard ships at sea. Hutcheson was born in Jersey, Channel Islands, in 1840, and died in Portsea Island, in

Used The Best Of

USED: The Best of Ken Burns Jazz

In conjunction with documentary filmmaker Ken Burns’ ten-part 2000 PBS special, Columbia/Legacy and Verve teamed up to issue a special series of reissues covering much of the history of 20th century jazz. The central release of this program was the five-CD box set Ken Burns Jazz: The Story of America’s Music, which was augmented by no less than 22 single-artist anthologies. The Best of Ken Burns Jazz is the commercially available single-CD sampler, all of its 20 tracks taken from the five-CD box set. In this context, this could be taken as the equivalent of sitting down to a full Indian dinner, and not getting any further than the samosa appetizer. Still, it does fit a good amount of classic jazz onto one disc, including selections by Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Billie Holiday, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Sarah Vaughan, Dave Brubeck, Horace Silver, John Coltrane, and Miles Davis. Perhaps this could be a good gift or purchase for the average Joe, your Uncle Norman for instance, who enjoyed the documentary episodes and would like a keepsake of the program, but is by no means a jazz buff or even record collector. Note, incidentally, that only one of the tracks postdates 1959, and even that song is a 1992 Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra version of “Take the ‘A’ Train.” So this disc, like to a certain extent the documentary series that sparked its release, can be taken as a rough survey of the history of jazz leading up to 1960, but not one that adequately covers the music’s growth in the last 40 years of the 20th century. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi

The Euahlayi Tribe A

The Euahlayi Tribe: a Study of Aboriginal Life in Australia

According to Wikipedia: “Australia, officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a country in the southern hemisphere comprising the mainland of the world’s smallest continent, the major island of Tasmania, and numerous other islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.N4 Neighbouring countries include Indonesia, East Timor, and Papua New Guinea to the north, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia to the north-east, and New Zealand to the south-east. For around 40,000 years before European settlement commenced in the late 18th century, the Australian mainland and Tasmania were inhabited by around 250 individual nations[7] of indigenous Australians.[8] After sporadic visits by fishermen from the immediate north, and European discovery by Dutch explorers in 1606,[9] the eastern half of Australia was claimed by the British in 1770 and initially settled through penal transportation to the colony of New South Wales, founded on 26 January 1788. The population grew steadily in the following years; the continent was explored, and during the 19th century another five largely self-governing Crown Colonies were established. On 1 January 1901, the six colonies became a federation, and the Commonwealth of Australia was formed. Since Federation, Australia has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system and remains a Commonwealth realm. The population is just over 21.3 million, with approximately 60% concentrated in and around the mainland state capitals of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide. The nation’s capital city is Canberra, located in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Technologically advanced and industrialised, Australia is a prosperous nation and hasgood results in many international comparisons of national performance such as health care, life expectancy, quality-of-life, human development, public education, economic freedom, and the protection of civil liberties and political rights.”

This is one of the best train videos I have ever seen. They have a lot of footage of the history of steam trains from popular freight locomotives to streamlined steam locomotives. The narration is neat, and it is rather poetic throughout most of the video. The music composition is wonderful. The video quality may not be very good, because this was originally an old VHS with older video quality. This part of the video talks about how a steam engine works and about the early age of railroads.
