Passenger Rail Transport in Montana: Empire Builder, North Coast Hiawatha

Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Empire Builder is a passenger train route operated by Amtrak in the Midwest and Northwest. It is Amtrak’s busiest long-distance route and busiest daily train, carrying more than 500,000 travelers annually since 2007. Overall, it is the railroad’s 10th-busiest line. Before Amtrak, the Empire Builder was the flagship train of the Great Northern Railway. The current route runs from Chicago, Illinois to the Pacific Northwest. The line splits in Spokane, Washington, terminating at Seattle, Washington’s King Street Station (2,206 miles, or 3,550 km from Chicago) in the north and Portland, Oregon’s Union Station (2,257 miles, or 3,632 km from Chicago) in the south. The train passes through the states of Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon. Layovers (train service stops) are made in Saint Paul, Minot, Havre, and Spokane. Other major stops on the route are Milwaukee; Fargo; Whitefish, Montana; and Vancouver, Washington. Host railways include BNSF Railway’s northern route from Seattle to Minneapolis, Minnesota Commercial from Minneapolis to St. Paul, Canadian Pacific from St. Paul to Glenview, and Metra from Glenview to Chicago. One train passes in each direction daily. The schedule is timed so the train will pass through the scenic Rocky Mountains (especially Glacier National Park) during daylight, but this is more likely in summer and on eastbound trains. It normally takes 45 to 46 hours to travel the entire route, barring delays. This averages 50 miles per hour (80 km/h) including stops. The modern westbound (Amtrak) Empire Builder departs Chicago’s Union Station in early afternoon, and travels north to Milwaukee. After leaving Milwaukee, it passes through the rural landscape of Wisconsin, crossin… More:

Three midwestern railroads introduced luxury passenger service in 1935, competing for Chicago–Twin Cities business and leisure travelers. Chicago and North Western’s modern, sleek, and fast rail line began with a conventional steam-powered train dubbed the “400” and named after its ambitious schedule: “400 miles in 400 minutes.” In 1939, it evolved into an even faster diesel-powered streamlined train, eventually expanding into a fleet of streamliners that served Wisconsin, Minnesota,

Starting A Startup Business Is

Austin, TX (PRWEB) February 22, 2012

The “American Dream” is also the dream of most people in the world, and even in America during the recession, most people would like to start a business of their own, says Justin Douglas of Shoestring Publishing. “Bloomberg has some recent statistics that show how popular the idea of owning a business is, as people are looking for a better job, trying to make more money to survive, or working jobs they don’t like, the idea of starting a business is appealing,” he says.

According to Mr. Douglas, there are a set of reasons that people want to start their own business, including independence and the fact that when you are the owner you cannot be fired or demoted. “This is a huge plus in the recession, and people are willing to work a little harder if necessary to be able to be the boss and have that kind of stability,” he says. “The great thing is that Shoestring Publishing has courses on startups that are actually easy to start and can make a lot more money than you would make at a regular job, so you don’t have to work hard if you have the training and choose the right startup business. We identify startups that can be started by average people, started quickly, with little or no money to start a business, and have very high income from day one. These opportunities exist and our course teachers have done these before. In some cases our courses are priced as low as $ 7 and you can come out owning your own business, so this is a rare chance to learn from experts who have walked the walk and have the real experience to tell you exactly how to get set up. This is not a gimmick, these are real business courses for $ 7.”

Mr. Douglas explains: “Some of the reasons our particular startup business courses are popular are:

You can be the boss and never lose the job. Work as much or as little as you want.
Full time or part time, set your own hours.
Many opportunities are very high paying
100% recession proof
Fast to start many businesses (some can be started in less than 2 Weeks)
Low start up costs (in some cases, less than $ 500)
No special education or experience is needed, anyone can do most of our startup opportunities! Most of our opportunities are extremely easy to make money with.
Work in any city
Grow at any pace
Easy to sell the business in the future
The market is wide open.”

Mayday Parade

Mayday Parade takes their music seriously. In 2010, Songkick, the web's live music bible, recognized them as the hardest working band of 2010, with 194 bookings and 74,000 miles on the road. "We've always toured as much as we can," says Derek Sanders, Mayday's singer and piano player. "I didn't realize how many miles we logged, so it was nice to be acknowledged." The band hails from Tallahassee, Florida and includes vocalist/pianist Derek Sanders, bassist Jeremy Lenzo, lead guitarist Alex Garcia, Brooks Betts on rhythm guitar and drummer Jake Bundrick. Since getting together in 2005, the boys have been inseparable, playing as hard as they work, forging strong bonds of friendship as they travel the world, delivering a high octane stage show driven by their strong songwriting and charismatic stage presence. It was this spirit of camaraderie that brought them to a beach house in Panacea, Florida, to write the songs for Mayday Parade. "Alligator Point is an hour away from where we live," Sanders explained. "We decided the best way to write an album was to get away from everything and jam. There were no distractions, just the five of us and the ocean, although I don't think we went swimming more than a couple of times. We set up the equipment in the living room and played when we wanted to. We structured the songs together to come up with the best possible result. We all contributed lyrics, lead lines, bass parts, bits of melody and ideas for arrangements. We didn't bring in any outsiders to do co-writing, like we did on Anywhere But Here. Every song was a full collaboration. We decided to call it Mayday Parade, because, as much of a cliché as it is, we feel like a new band after all the stuff we've been through in the last six years." After a month of intense composing, the band chose 12 of the best songs and went into the studio with Zack Odom and Kenneth Mount, the duo that helmed their first album, A Lesson In Romantics. "Ken and Zack are funny, talented and easy to work with," Sanders says. "They have a lot of passion and make the studio a fun environment. We met them for two weeks of pre-production, getting the songs into shape and talked about adding strings, trumpet and other things to the sound. We had complete artistic control, which was cool." With the exceptions of Mount's trumpet, Odom's cello and a small choir and string section, the band played every note on the album in real time. They recorded group vocals by gathering around a single mike. The songs on Mayday Parade include rousing anthems, solid mid-temp rockers and a handful of heartfelt ballads, all in keeping with their desire for musical diversity. The set opens with "Oh Well, Oh Well," which will be the first single and the first video from the record. Acoustic piano, subtle cello and Sanders' wrenching vocal lead into the band's blistering sonic attack. "We all love this song," Sanders says. "It starts slow, kicks in fast and energetic, and keeps building. We put a lot of feeling and emotion into it." Mayday has been working out the arrangement for "When You See My Friends" at sound checks for the last year. It's a fatalistic mid-tempo rocker about a nasty break up marked by fervent group vocals, solid rhythm work by Betts and Garcia's wailing lead guitar. Other choice cuts include "Priceless," a rocker with a driving rhythm, strong harmony vocals from the band, soaring guitars and unexpected changes in tempo; "Stay," a mid tempo heartbreaker that features a small string section and builds to an aching, emotional climax and the power ballad "Without The Bitter The Sweet Isn't As Sweet." Garcia's quiet acoustic guitar introduces the tune to set up one of Sanders' most emotive vocals. He also plays a subtle counter melody on grand piano. When the band kicks in, they knock the tune out of the park. The men of Mayday Parade got together in the winter of 2005, part of the natural evolution of the thriving Tallahassee scene. "All the bands in town supported each other," Sanders recalls. "We met at a warehouse a lot of bands used for rehearsing and hanging out. There was a community of musicians and local clubs that supported original music. I was in a band called Defining Moment with Brooks (Betts, rhythm guitar) and Jeremy (Lenzo, bass). Alex (Garcia, lead guitar) and Jake (Bundrick, drums) were in Kid Named Chicago with Jason Lancaster (the band's former vocalist and guitarist). We started hanging out and realized we took the music more seriously than the other guys in our bands. Some of them were married and had kids; they didn't want to tour. The six of us started jamming and writing songs and it felt great. We quit our old bands and started Mayday, although we didn't have a band name at first." The unnamed band went into the studio to record Tales Told by Dead Friends, a six song EP produced by Lee Dyess. "We played our first show and decided on a band name while we were making the EP. We put up a few songs on MySpace, then hit the road with Van's Warped Tour." The band didn't have a slot on the tour, but they sold their CD to people hanging out in the parking lots and standing on line to get into the venue. They moved more than 10,000 copies in a few months. "We had CD players and headphones and CDs in our backpacks. It was good training for promoting the band." Mayday Parade's MySpace page got thousands of hits as the EP built up an underground buzz. Labels started to take notice. "We were only a band for seven or eight months and hadn't gone on tour yet, when we were contacted by Fearless Records," Sanders says. "They called our manager, we met them in a studio for an audition and got signed." In 2006, Mayday Parade toured with Wheatus, Brandston and Melee, then went on the road with Plain White T's. Between dates they cut their debut, A Lesson In Romantics. MTV's GirlsGonePunk called it "the best album to come out this year. " The video for "When I Get Home, You're So Dead" got over 75,000 hits in two days when it premiered on the front page of MySpace Music. It went on to sell more than 170,000 copies and reached the Top Ten on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. Jason Lancaster left the band before A Lesson In Romantics was released. The band made Anywhere But Here, their second album, with the help of producer David Bendeth (Paramore, Underoath). The band distilled the essence of the 50 songs they'd written on the road into another powerful statement. Mayday Parade followed it up by headlining the Ernie Ball Stage on the Van's Warped Tour in 2010, as well as touring the UK with The Maine. In February of 2010, they released Valdosta, a six song, mostly acoustic, EP. "We had a couple of new songs we wanted people to hear and decided to revisit a few older songs with acoustic instruments," Sanders says. While they're waiting for their new self-titled album to hit the streets in October, Mayday will stay on the road doing what they do best – wowing their fans with their heartfelt songs and energetic performances. "We're very excited about this album," Sanders concludes. "We want to thank everyone who believes in this band. It's amazing that we've been able to make a living playing music. Our goal is to continue touring, nationally and internationally, and put on the best shows we can."

Since 2005, Fitzsimmons has created three full-length albums, each thoroughly themed and embossed with matters of family history, intimate disclosure, and bold confession, yielding rich folk music, ranging from the stark and acoustic to the voluminous and electronic. All the while reflecting William's commitment to addressing what is always pressing, and yet all too often ignored. Fitzsimmons' path into music came at the influence and education of his parents, both of whom filled his childhood home with a myriad of instruments, sing-a-longs, and theoretical instruction. However, far from being a mere pastime in the Fitzsimmons' household, music was a communicative necessity between William and his parents, both of whom being blind, relied on the language of music to bridge the relational gap between themselves and a child who experienced the world entirely differently from them. During his collegiate and post-graduate years, Fitzsimmons left music behind in order to pursue a career in the mental health field; becoming a therapist was a long-held aspiration. Upon completion of a Master's Degree in counseling, he worked as a therapist with the severely mentally ill for several years. It was during the latter part of his training that he began to write songs as both a preparative exercise for his work in the psychiatric field, and as a personal catharsis to deal with his own long-standing psychological maladies. His first two albums, homemade and self-produced, were expositions on both his unorthodox upbringing and his family's disintegration during his youth. Their understated presentation and overt descriptions of relational and familial disillusionment met quickly and potently with listeners. Very soon thereafter, still working within psychology, William found his songs spreading broadly and being featured on national television programs. However, the process of such revelatory writing and rumination was taking a gradual and heavy toll. During the making of the Goodnight album, Fitzsimmons saw most of the segments of his life begin to tear asunder. Fitzsimmons' third effort, 2008's The Sparrow and the Crow, was a detailed and afflictive retelling of the events surrounding his divorce from his wife of nearly ten years. Written as a personal apology to her, the album is a foreboding but genuine tale of misfortune and a reconciling of the darkest point of his life. It was named iTunes' Best Folk Album of that same year. Following the release of Sparrow, William would take a moratorium from songwriting for over two years. Fitzsimmons' new release, Gold In The Shadow, is a musical reflection of the personal resuscitation and psychological renovation, which took place in the years following his divorce. Based on a specific set of psychopathological disorders from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV (DSM-IV), he describes the songs as "a real and long coming confrontation with personal demons, past mistakes, and the specter of mental illness that has hovered over me for the great majority of my life." However, whereas nearly the whole of William's previous albums have dealt with the bleak and somber side of inter- and intrapersonal disaster, Gold is a work focused on healing. William continues: "I had reached the point where I was either going to yield to my sicknesses or engage them headlong. In either case, I could no longer continue the way I was." Gold In The Shadow represents a welcomed musical departure, not from authenticity in writing, but in the field of focus. It is a return to his pre-music therapeutic passions, but with one eye now fixated on actual and optimistic change. It is ripe with personal elements, but also represents his first foray into external perspective taking; examining the lives and psychological struggles of those around him in addition to his own. It is an acknowledgment of the shadow self and the Todestrieb (Freud's "death instinct"); but, even still and more so, an acceptance of hope.
